Building Peace Through Social and Emotional Learning
 
Overview
 
The Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) Integration and Implementation Peace Initiative is a collaboration between the Rotary Club of Barbados South (RCBS), the Caribbean Institute for Social and Emotional Learning (CiSEL), and The Massy Foundation.
 
The pilot programme supports primary and secondary school students at The Lodge School, The Ellerslie Secondary School, St George Primary, and Good Shepherd Primary.
 
As the world, including the Caribbean, becomes increasingly volatile, uncertain, complex, and ambiguous, it is essential to equip our youth with the skills to not only confront these challenges but to thrive amidst them. The project targets their emotional intelligence, which is directly linked to academic success, emotional well-being, and positive social behaviour.
 
This initiative is crucial now as students face unprecedented pressures from various fronts, including academic demands, social media, and the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. By enhancing their emotional literacy, resilience, and interpersonal skills, the project will empower students to manage emotions, make responsible decisions, and foster healthier relationships.
 
Our Approach
 
The initiative delivers training for students, teachers, administrators, parents, and student leaders, ensuring that social and emotional learning is integrated into the school environment. By strengthening emotional intelligence (EQ), the programme promotes better decision-making, resilience, and positive behaviour.

  • Enhanced capacity among educators and families to sustain SEL practices
Impact is measured through tools such as the SEI-YV (emotional intelligence assessment) and Education Vital Signs (school climate assessment).
 
Sustainability
 
By embedding SEL into school culture and building capacity among key stakeholders, the initiative creates a lasting foundation for more emotionally intelligent individuals and a more peaceful society. The model also has the potential to be expanded across schools throughout Barbados.
