AccessAbility: Pathways to Independence
Breaking Barriers Through Training, Inclusion, and Empowerment

Persons with disabilities continue to face barriers to employment, education, and social inclusion.

With the overall aim of building a more inclusive Barbados, The Rotary Club of Barbados South (RCBS), under its Breaking Barriers initiative, proudly launched AccessAbility: Pathways to Independence on March 18, 2026, during Disabilities Awareness Month.

The initiative is designed to empower persons with disabilities while strengthening inclusive practices across our communities.

Developed in collaboration with key partners, including the Barbados Council for the Disabled and supported by the Barbados People Development Unit of the Ministry of Labour, Social Security and Third Sector, the initiative focuses on building skills, increasing access to opportunities, and promoting full participation in society.

A Practical Approach to Inclusion

AccessAbility is built on three core training streams:
  • Train-the-Trainer: Building a cadre of professionals and Rotarians equipped with inclusive facilitation techniques to ensure sustainability and wider reach.
  • Professionals & Community Members: Raising awareness, and equipping participants with tools for inclusive communication, service delivery, and workplace practices.
  • Persons with Disabilities: Delivering skills-based training in areas such as entrepreneurship, financial literacy, digital skills, accessible agriculture, workplace etiquette, and career development (resume writing/interview skills).

Empowering Through Skills and Opportunity

Through interactive workshops and real-world application to be delivered over a 3-month period (March-May 2026), participants will be equipped not only with technical skills but also with the confidence and knowledge to pursue employment, entrepreneurship, and independent living.

The programme also seeks to connect participants with existing national opportunities and support systems, further enhancing long-term impact.

Importantly, AccessAbility is shaped by the voices and experiences of persons with disabilities, ensuring that training is relevant, respectful, and responsive to real needs.

AccessAbility: Pathways to Independence is more than a training programme—it is a step toward breaking down barriers, shifting mindsets, and building a society where everyone has the opportunity to contribute and thrive.
