Celebrating Rotary Learning
At our May 27th meeting our Club Learning Facilitator, PBG Sonya, presented certificates to members of the Rotary Club of Barbados South in recognition of their commitment to learning and professional development through Rotary’s learning programs.
These members played an important role in helping our club to achieve its learning objectives. Their dedication to personal growth and Rotary education reflects the club’s ongoing commitment to excellence in service and leadership.

Wednesday May 6th 6:30pm In-Person Evening
RCBS was privileged to begin Youth Service Month with an insightful address by Major Michael Jules of the Barbados Cadet Corps. Major Jules delivered an informative presentation on the history, structure, and operations of the Barbados Cadet Corps, outlining the organization's important role in developing leadership, discipline, citizenship, and life skills among Barbados' youth.
During his presentation, Major Jules explained the various programs and opportunities available to cadets and highlighted the positive impact the Corps continues to have on youth development across the island. He also issued a call for community minded individuals to volunteer as officers, encouraging Rotarians to lend their experience and expertise to help guide and mentor the next generation.
The meeting also featured the presentation of the Club's annual contribution to the Barbados National Youth Symphony Orchestra in support of its Summer Camp program. Accepting the cheque on behalf of the Orchestra was Assistant Director Mark Husbands. Also present was soprano Chantel Martin, one of the outstanding young performers featured in last year's Best of Youth concert. The contribution reflects the Club's continued commitment to supporting youth development through the arts and music education.
The evening served as a reminder of the many ways in which service organizations, educational programs, and community partners work together to create opportunities for Barbados' youth to grow, develop their talents, and become future leaders.
Wednesday May 13th 6:30pm Zoom Evening
Our guest speaker for this Meeting was Ms. Meka King, Director of Community Service Projects of the Interact Club of Queen’s College. Meka gave a presentation on her experience at the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) 2025 held in Antigua. She shared details about the three-day leadership development conference, including sessions on ethical leadership, digital awareness, mental health, and service projects, as well as her successful implementation of learned skills in her personal life, church sermons, and social media presence, and discussed plans to implement service projects at her Interact Club.
Mika was appreciative of the opportunity to attend RYLA and suggested this invaluable experience makes a significant difference toward shaping the perspective of the individuals who attend.
Wednesday May 20th - 12:30pm Zoom Lunch
At the May 20th Zoom lunchtime meeting, our guest speaker Tanja Gittens gave a presentation on fear and authentic living titled "Living Out Loud." It explored the nature of fear, its Caribbean-specific manifestations, and strategies for mastering fear to live authentically.
Tanja discussed how fear manifests in different ways for Caribbean people, covering topics from judgment and failure to change and success, explaining how cultural conditioning and generational patterns can create barriers to personal growth and achievement.
Key discussion themes included generational differences in risk-taking, the impact of overprotective parenting, and the balance between secrecy and selectiveness among younger generations.
The presentation was well received by members and triggered engaging discussion on the topic.
Wednesday May 27th - 6:30pm In-Person Evening Fellowship
The meeting started with moments of reflection and recognition. Tribute was paid to two fallen Rotarians, PP David Antrobus and PP Larry Tatum, whose remarkable lives and contributions to service were fondly remembered. Secretary Ryan delivered the tribute to PP David Antrobus, while PP Steven paid tribute to PP Larry Tatum, both sharing heartfelt remarks in honour of their lives and dedication to Rotary.
In addition, certificates were presented to members who participated in achieving the club’s learning objectives during the Rotary year. The presentations recognized the commitment of members who contributed toward the club’s learning objectives.
Once these formalities were completed, we participated in a warm and enjoyable fellowship evening hosted by the club’s Membership Committee. Members and guests gathered for a lively bingo social which saw an excellent turnout. The evening provided an opportunity for Rotarians and friends to strengthen fellowship while enjoying friendly competition and camaraderie.

Thank You for Making Our Summer Luau Cruise a Success!
The Rotary Club of Barbados South extends heartfelt thanks to everyone who contributed to the success of our Summer Luau Cruise aboard the MC Dreamchaser 2.
We are deeply grateful to our Rotarians, family members, friends, sponsors, donors, and patrons whose support made this event possible. Whether you purchased a ticket, sold tickets, donated prizes, assisted with planning and logistics, or simply came out to enjoy the evening, your contribution played an important role in making the event a memorable one.
Special thanks are due to PP Peter Thompson and his committee for their hard work and dedication in organizing this important fundraiser. Their efforts, along with the support of many volunteers, helped create an enjoyable atmosphere of fellowship and fun for all who attended.
Funds raised from the event will support our Back-to-School Program and help us continue to make a positive impact in the lives of those we serve.

AccessAbility - Pathways to Independence Continues
The Rotary Club of Barbados South is pleased to report excellent execution of its Pathways to Independence program, that was conducted in partnership with the Barbados Council for the Disabled through grant funding support from the People Development Unit of the Ministry of Labour Social Security and the Third Sector.
The program has successfully engaged participants in a series of practical, empowering sessions designed to build skills, confidence, and independence. These sessions have been well received and continue to foster meaningful personal and professional development among participants.
In addition, a special training session for professionals on Inclusive Practices will be held on June 5th at the Savannah Beach Club, broadening the impact by encouraging more inclusive environments across workplaces and organizations.
The initiative will culminate with a Closing Ceremony on June 12th at the Courtyard by Marriott, where participants’ achievements will be celebrated and recognized.
The Club looks forward to the continued success of all participants and extends sincere thanks to all partners, facilitators, and supporters who have made this initiative possible.
Bridgetown Feeding
Individuals who assisted with Bridgetown Feeding on May 25th 2026
Another successful installation of Bridgetown feeding was completed on May 25th 2026. Dir Graham, Rtn Pat and Rtn Robert provided the meals on behalf of RCBS. Additionally, 18 meals were donated by Alistair Gleen of IICA. Between RCBS, RCBW and IICA we served a total of 136 meals.
Meal distribution occurred quickly and efficiently as our amazing team of Rotarians ably assisted by the caterer and our little Ava executed flawlessly. Thank you to everyone who assisted. This project makes a significant impact on the lives of needy Barbadians and none of this will be possible without you.

As we approach the close of the Rotary year, we encourage all members who have not yet done so to become Sustaining Members before the end of June. Medical Moonshots: Fighting Cervical Cancer with Dr. Richard Godfrey
Cervical cancer is the fourth most common cancer in women globally, but it’s also highly preventable. Rotarian, surgical oncologist, and author Dr. Richard Godfrey has traveled the world making cervical cancer prevention more accessible. His forthcoming book, Medical Moonshots: Winning the Cancer War, talks about his lifesaving work. Niala Boodhoo recently sat down with Dr. Godfrey to discuss his career, cervical cancer, and Rotary’s work to eliminate it.
