Celebrating 121 Years of Service Above Self

February 23, 2026 marked 121 years since the founding of Rotary in Chicago in 1905 by Paul Harris. What began as a small gathering of professionals committed to friendship and ethical business has grown into a global movement of neighbors, leaders, and problem-solvers united by a shared purpose: Service Above Self.

Today, through Rotary International, more than 1.4 million members across the world work together to address some of humanity’s most pressing challenges. From promoting peace and supporting education to protecting the environment and growing local economies, Rotary’s reach extends far beyond borders.

One of Rotary’s most historic achievements has been its leadership in the global effort to eradicate polio through the Global Polio Eradication Initiative. What once paralyzed hundreds of thousands of children each year has now been reduced by more than 99 percent; a testament to what is possible when commitment meets collaboration.

Rotary’s true strength lies not only in global initiatives, it lives in local action. It lives in literacy programs that empower young readers, in scholarships that open doors of opportunity, in community projects that restore dignity and hope. It lives in every Rotarian who chooses to give time, talent, and heart in service to others.

As we celebrate 121 years, we also reflect on Rotary’s enduring values; fellowship, integrity, diversity, leadership, and service. These principles continue to guide us as we adapt to a changing world while remaining steadfast in our mission.

This anniversary is not only a celebration of our past it is a recommitment to our future. The challenges facing our communities require innovation, compassion, and partnership. Rotary stands ready.

May we continue to imagine, lead, and serve together.

Happy 121st Anniversary Rotary!

Previous Meeting Details

Wednesday February 4th 6:30pm In-Person Evening Meeting

At this meeting, we were pleased to welcome Mr. Tony Olton to address us following the successful completion of the first cohort of our Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) Project.

This impactful initiative is a collaborative effort between the Club and Mr. Olton of the Caribbean Institute for Social and Emotional Learning (CiSEL). The project focuses on strengthening Social and Emotional Learning in two primary and three secondary schools across Barbados, with a clear emphasis on enhancing students’ emotional intelligence (EQ).

At its core, the SEL Project aims to equip students with essential life skills; including self-awareness, self-management, empathy, and responsible decision-making. By fostering these competencies, the programme seeks to improve academic performance, strengthen peer and teacher relationships, and support overall student well-being. Ultimately, the initiative contributes to building more inclusive, supportive, and positive school climates.

Mr. Olton shared insights from the first cohort, highlighting encouraging progress and the challenges that were faced in the execution of this phase.  He indicated that adjustments had to be made to facilitate the school atmosphere that reflected the lived reality of the students in their community.  As the project enters graduation season for its inaugural group, the Club celebrates this significant milestone and the tangible difference already being made in our schools.

Planning is now underway for Cohort 2, as the Rotary Club of Barbados South continues its commitment to empowering young people and investing in the social and emotional development of the next generation.

We look forward to building on this momentum and deepening the impact of this transformative programme in the months ahead.

In addition to being addressed by Mr. Olton on the status of the project, Rtn Malcom and PP Mike were presented with their long service awards as they were absent from the charter celebrations.

President Jacklyn highlighted the need for volunteers to facilitate various training sessions and emphasized the importance of interactive, hands-on learning approaches. The project aims to train 10-15 trainers, 50 community professionals, and 50 persons with disabilities. expected outcomes include increased awareness of inclusive behaviors and potential internships within Rotary networks.

Wednesday February 25th - 12:30pm In-Person Lunch Meeting

At this meeting members were treated to a series of uplifting updates that reflect both the impact of our programmes and the strength of leadership within our club.

PDG Sonya reported on the latest developments in our annual Model United Nations initiative. Now in its 13th year as a collaborative effort among the Rotary Club of Barbados South, Rotary Club of Barbados, and Rotary Club of Barbados West, Model UN continues to provide a transformative experience for participating students. PDG Sonia shared highlights from the recent sessions.

President Jacqueline also brought exciting news to the club. She announced that we have been awarded a $10,000 grant from Republic Bank through its “Make a Difference” programme. These funds will go directly toward supporting and expanding our Agrokids initiative, strengthening our efforts to engage young people in agriculture, sustainability, and food security.

The meeting also celebrated significant milestones in Rotary recognition. PHF Denise was elevated to Paul Harris Fellow Plus 6, and PDG Sonia to Paul Harris Fellow Plus 7; remarkable achievements that reflect their sustained commitment to The Rotary Foundation and to Service Above Self. Their continued generosity and dedication set an inspiring example for us all.

Rotary Clubs Unite to Tackle Mental Health Stigma

The Rotary Club of Barbados South, Rotary Club of Barbados, and Rotary Club of Barbados West came together on February 19th for a meaningful and timely joint panel discussion focused on "Tackling Mental Health Stigma."

The session featured insightful presentations from Dr. Deanne Ford, psychologist; Ms. Alison Gotip, mental health and addiction specialist; and Mr. Ronald Pope, psychologist. Each presenter brought a wealth of professional experience and practical perspectives to the discussion, highlighting the importance of breaking down misconceptions, fostering empathy, and creating safe spaces for open conversations about mental health.

The presenters addressed the realities of stigma in our communities, the barriers it creates to seeking help, and the collective responsibility we share in promoting understanding and support. Rotarians engaged in thoughtful dialogue, asked probing questions, and reflected on how our clubs can play a stronger advocacy and service role in this critical area.

The joint meeting was a powerful reminder that mental health is not a peripheral issue; it is central to the well-being of our families, workplaces, and communities. By coming together across clubs, we demonstrated Rotary’s commitment to awareness, education, and action.

We thank our presenters for an enlightening and fruitful discussion, and we look forward to continuing the conversation in meaningful and impactful ways.

Inspiring Future Leaders: Rotary Youth Model United Nations Enters Its 13th Year

For thirteen years, the Rotary Clubs of Barbados have proudly invested in one of the most meaningful youth development initiatives on our island; the Rotary Youth Model United Nations (MUN). This programme continues to stand as a testament to Rotary’s commitment to empowering young people and preparing them to become thoughtful leaders, informed citizens, and global thinkers.

Through Model United Nations, students are given the unique opportunity to step into the role of diplomats. They research global issues, represent countries, engage in debate, negotiate resolutions, and collaborate with their peers. In the process, they develop critical skills in public speaking, diplomacy, leadership, and problem-solving that will serve them throughout their lives and careers.

Perhaps even more importantly, MUN helps young people understand that their voices matter. It encourages them to think beyond their immediate surroundings and consider the challenges and opportunities facing our global community. It nurtures confidence, builds awareness, and inspires purpose.

This programme reflects Rotary’s core belief in investing in youth as a pathway to building stronger communities and a more peaceful world. Many past participants have gone on to become leaders in their schools, professions, and communities, carrying forward the values of service and responsible leadership that Rotary promotes.

For the past 7 weeks, Rotarians and coordinators have been at UN House, mentoring youth from various secondary schools across Barbados as they prepare for the final session on March 7th.  With all the exchanges around the globe related to tariffs, the focus this year is on the World Trade Organization.

Rotarians are warmly encouraged to attend and witness firsthand the remarkable talent, passion, and potential of our young delegates. Your presence demonstrates Rotary’s continued support and encouragement, and it reinforces to these students that their efforts are valued.

The final session is a culmination of weeks of preparation, learning, and growth. It is also a powerful reminder of why Rotary invests in youth programmes such as MUN as today’s participants are tomorrow’s leaders.

We invite all Rotarians to join us on March 7th, at 9am at the Lloyd Erskine Sandiford Centre to support, celebrate, and be inspired by the next generation.

New Rotary Peace Center at Symbiosis International University in India

Leaders of Rotary International and Symbiosis International University gathered in Pune, India, to inaugurate a new Rotary Peace Center at the university. Supported through The Rotary Foundation, the center will provide experienced peacebuilders from across Asia with one-year professional development certificate fellowships to study subjects such as conflict transformation, sustainable development, and social change.

“With India’s rich diversity and complex social landscape, the peace center will offer unique opportunities for cultivating leaders who can navigate conflict with empathy and innovation,” says Bharat S. Pandya, a trustee of The Rotary Foundation and member of the Rotary Club of Borivli, Maharashtra, India. “This center will nurture a new generation of leaders in Asia who are dedicated to strengthening dialogue, understanding, and sustainable peace.”

The new center will host up to 40 Rotary Peace Fellows per year to earn a postgraduate diploma in peace and development studies. The program is designed for midcareer professionals with experience working in peace and development fields, including within governments, non-governmental and community organizations, educational institutions, media outlets, and international agencies.

Symbiosis International University’s motto, Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam, or The World Is One Family, reflects a commitment to internationalism and cultural understanding that dates to its founding. Established in 1971 as a cultural exchange center for students from other countries (particularly Africa) who were experiencing discrimination, Symbiosis today has more than 55,000 students from at least 85 nations.

The peace center will be housed at the university’s hilltop Lavale campus. Highlighting issues relevant to Asian countries, the curriculum will include many opportunities for the fellows to gain real-world experience through field visits outside of Pune as well as locally. Symbiosis has close relationships with more than 35 nearby villages, whose residents use its legal aid clinic and vocational training programs. The fellows will work with faculty members, other students, and village residents to learn about the villages, propose strategies for their development, and meet with local leaders for feedback.

“The university’s commitment to the advancement and well-being of not only their own students, but all people in their community and beyond, strongly aligns with Rotary’s mission to do good in the world,” she says. “Peace can only be achieved when dignity, integrity, and inclusion are prioritized across society.”

With the opening of the new peace center, Rotary’s eighth, The Rotary Foundation will be able to award up to 170 fully funded peace fellowships each year. More than 1,800 fellows have completed Rotary Peace Center programs around the world since 2002, going on to leadership roles in government agencies, NGOs, educational institutions, and international organizations. The first applications to attend the Symbiosis peace center are being accepted through 15 May 2026, and it will welcome its first group of fellows in early 2027.

By training leaders in the strategies and practices of peacebuilding, Rotary Peace Centers have a wide-ranging impact on the world that will be felt for years to come, says Rotary International President Francesco Arezzo.

“In this interconnected world, peace can no longer be viewed as an abstract ideal. It must be cultivated through institutions that combine knowledge, ethical leadership, and action,” Arezzo says. “The Rotary Peace Center at Symbiosis International University reflects Rotary’s commitment to nurturing leaders who understand and act with integrity toward a cause. The center will contribute not only to regional peacebuilding in Asia, but to a stronger global framework for shared responsibility.”
